In the Great Qing, the last heyday of imperial China, Giuseppe Castiglione went to China from Macau. He used Western techniques to draw the Chinese bird-and-flower paintings, which opened the door to the Far East. From that heyday, the artist felt melancholy and created the works with inexplicable emotions. He captured and transformed Castiglione’s Chinese paintings, and drew the birds and flowers by adopting back the Western painting techniques. From his works, the sun was big and round, and the “hybrids” were not limited in forms. They were neither Eastern nor Western style, just like hinnies. Hinnies are neither donkeys nor horses, but they are all natural born. According to a Chinese saying “It doesn’t matter whether it is a yellow cat or a black cat, as long as it catches mice, it is a good cat.” Through our generation, will anyone else review themselves in the next heyday? If we are all gone, are we deserved to be recorded?
